Menu for Your Mind

The SARAH PELTZMAN EDUCATIONAL SERIES consists of three and a half educational units, beginning Thursday morning, August 22, 10:00-11:30 a.m., sponsored by the Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood. All units will be presented live and in-person in Goldsmith Hall from 10-11:30 am.

The cost is $25.00 for each full unit, $10 for the mini-unit, and a discounted fee of $70 if you enroll in all four units by the beginning of the 24-25 year. The fee for couples is $35 per full unit, $20 for mini-unit and $100 total for a couple enrolling in all four units at the beginning of the 24-25 year.  

All units are open to the entire Jewish community of Greater Kansas City. Each unit will consist of five weeks of class, in addition to a three-week class in March.

Unit 1: “Forgiveness – Preparation for High Holidays”

This will be a discussion of Sins, but NOT a how-to! We will discuss sins against people vs. G-d, and how to prepare for the High Holidays, including Rosh Hashanah, Slichot, Yom Kippur, Taschlich, Sukkot, Hoshana Rabba, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah.

Sep 5: “How to Prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Slichot”

Sep 12: “How to prepare for Yom Kippur and Taschlich”

Sep 19: “How to Prepare for Sukkot, Hashana Rabba, Shmini Atzeret & Simchat Torah”

Unit 2: “Fasts and Feasts”

This will be a dive into lesser-known holidays, and how we celebrate them. We will study the Israelite practices surrounding celebration as well as fasting during and after the Temple Period.

Unit 3: “Lashon Hara”

Lashon harah is the halakhic term for speech about someone that is harmful to them, even if it may be true. It is

considered to be a very serious sin in Jewish tradition. We will study rabbinic thought on lashon harah and modern
understanding of it, and we will grapple with the very real impact of the negative mitzvah to avoid lashon harah on
our own lives  

January 9, 16, 23, 30, February 13, 2025 (Goldsmith Hall)

Unit 4: “Women in Judaism Biblical/Medieval/Modern”

We will go over women-specific topics within Judaism: marriage and divorce, motherhood and barrenness, dependence vs independence (public & private roles), and leadership roles. Throughout this session, we will consider women’s contributions to Judaic Studies from ancient times to modern perspectives.
