Banishing Bullying |
About 15 years ago, after the publication of the book “Banishing Bullying Behavior” co-author Blanche Sosland was asked to speak to one of Beth Shalom’s chavurah groups. Following that program, then Sisterhood VP of Community Affairs, Carol Yarmo, helped to organize a committee to go out into the community to educate people on the serious issues of bullying.
A committee was formed, meeting monthly and conducting training sessions. After months of preparation, members were required to make age-appropriate presentations to the group and then choose an age group he/she was most interested in working with. For the past many years, this committee has been presenting Early Childhood sessions at St. Therese School in Parkville as well as at Shawnee Mission East, and they have been working with student teachers in colleges and universities withing a radius of 25-30 miles of KC. We are proud to announce that on SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 22, AT 10 AM, Sisterhood is partnering with the Polsky Religious School to bring this committee, along with Dr. Ram Chettiar, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Dr. Chettiar received his DO degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and his Master of Science in cellular and integrative physiology from the University of Nebraska. He is board certified in child and adolescent psychiatry, and he is licensed in Kansas and Missouri. Dr. Chettiar is the Medical Director, Depression & Anxiety in Youth (DAY) Clinic; Medical Director, Pediatric Care Network for Behavioral Health. Dr Chettiar is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine; Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr Chettiar is also instrumental in Red Card KC. The Red Card program is a Bullying Prevention joint effort with Sporting KC Soccer and Children’s Mercy Hospital. He has received numerous awards and honors including Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow of the Year, Department of Psychiatry, KUMC, the AACAP Educational Outreach Program Award, Gold Humanism Honor Society Inductee for excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service from UMKC to name a few. He is licensed to practice medicine in Kansas and Missouri.
