This Shabbat, Ira Kirschner, Ed.D., will present his findings from his brand-new research titled “Why Do I Need to Worry Every Minute?”: Jewish LGBQ College Students and their Experiences at Midwestern Universities.

Dr. Kirschner studied Jewish LGBQ college students in the Midwest to discover how the tensions of their two marginalized identities affected their experience. Did they have to hide one or both identities for safety in certain settings? Did they feel they could express pride in their multifaceted identities? And, are the levels of affirmation and acceptance celebrated in the past still adequate today?

Dr. Kirschner will begin speaking at the conclusion of services in Goldsmith Hall (approximately 11:35 am). After his presentation, Rabbi Glickman will facilitate a short Q & A before kiddush lunch begins. All are invited.

About Dr. Ira Kirschner:

Ira Kirschner, Ed.D., is a regular attendee of Beth Shalom’s Library Minyan. He earned his Doctorate in Education from the University of Kansas (KU), and his Master’s in Education as well as his Bachelor’s in Communications from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Ira completed a five-year IDF service in an infantry unit at the rank of Lieutenant, and most recently served in the IDF reserves as a Casualty Notification Officer. Ira also volunteered for ‘Shoval,’ an Israeli organization educating for acceptance and tolerance for LGBTQ+ people within Orthodox communities. After relocating to Kansas from Jerusalem four years ago, Ira worked for KU Hillel and the University of Kansas, volunteered with the KC Chevra Kadisha and the Lawrence Sexual Trauma and Abuse Care Center, and founded the Jewish Faculty and Staff Council at the University of Kansas. Ira and his partner Sam are excited to move to Boston this July, but are very sad to leave the Beth Shalom community behind.
